Last week, Trump signed an executive order entitled, “PROTECTING THE NATION FROM FOREIGN TERRORIST ENTRY INTO THE UNITED STATES.” This fool is not trying to protect us. Cheeto and his white supremist advisors are trying to provoke a terrorist attack so that he can declare Marshall law. Mark my words. This is a power play and it is at your expense.
The order temporarily bans nonimmigrants AND immigrants from seven countries from entering the U.S. for 90 days. The executive order does not include any countries from which radicalized Muslims have actually killed Americans in the U.S. since September 11, 2001. Of the 9/11 hijackers fifteen were from Saudi Arabia, two from UAE, one from Egypt and one from Lebanon. None of these four countries is included in the executive order.
The order suspends the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) for 120 days. This means that even refugees previously vetted and given permission to come to the U.S. after years of waiting to receive refugee status cannot enter the U.S. for at least four months. The order also lowers the cap set for refugees admissions in 2017.
The order also suspends immigration of anyone from Syria indefinitely, “until such time as I have determined that sufficient changes have been made to the USRAP to ensure that admission of Syrian refugees is consistent with the national interest.”
As the order took effect on Saturday, January 28, travelers who had previously been issued valid visas were detained at airports around the country. Tens of thousands of people protested at airports around the U.S. Many people were not allow to board planes destined for the U.S. despite holding valid U.S. visas and many people were returned from the U.S. to their countries.
Yesterday, U.S. District Judge James L. Robart, ruling on a lawsuit brought by the attorneys general of Washington and Minnesota against Cheeto, temporarily blocked enforcement of the executive order. His order is effective nationwide and government agencies have been ordered no to enforce the executive order. Earlier in the week federal judges in New York, California, Massachusetts and Virginia had issued rulings temporarily blocking aspects of the Trump order.
Last week, Sally Yates, acting U.S. Attorney General, refused to let DOJ lawyers defend the executive order in courts because she determined it was not legally defensible, not wise and not just. She was fired immediately by Trump because he said Yates “betrayed” the DOJ.
More than 100 former officials who served under past presidents from both parties signed a letter calling on the heads of multiple government agencies to urge Cheeto to “revisit and rescind” his recent executive order on immigration and refugees because a “blanket ban” on visitors from certain countries is “counterproductive from a security standpoint, and beneath the dignity of our great nation.” The letter states, “Simply put, this order will harm our national security.” How? The letter states that we will lose the intelligence of many of our allies, fuel ISIL propaganda, provide ISIL with strong recruiting tools, risk military and diplomatic efforts and loose local allies in these countries in the fight against terror.
Republican Senators John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, released a joint statement, stating that the executive order, “may do more to help terrorist recruitment than improve our security.”
More than 1000 State Department employees signed a dissent cable, which states, “A policy which closes our doors to over 200 million legitimate travelers in the hopes of preventing a small number of travelers who intend to harm Americans from using the visa system to enter the United States will not achieve its aim of making our country safer. Moreover, such a policy, runs counter to core American values…”
The cable then asks the rhetorical question: If this ban will not prevent terror attacks from occurring, what will it do? The answers: First, it will immediately sour our relations with much of the Muslim world, which will negatively affect the resources and intelligence to fight the root causes of terror abroad. Second, it will increase anti-American sentiment and risks tipping young people in these countries towards radicalization. Third, the humanitarian impact includes people not being able to receive life-saving medical treatment in the U.S. and impose other terrible humanitarian burdens. Finally, it hurts the American brand and is inimical to our core values and hallowed Constitutional protections. It discriminates based on national origin.
Be unrelenting in your criticism of everything that Trump is doing to make you and your family and your country less safe. Write letters of support to the judges and attorney generals who are staring up against these inane orders. Call your Representatives and Senators to draft laws to restrict Trump’s power to enact such wrong-headed dangerous policies with the flick of a pen and a flurry of cameras. Support your local organizations who are working hard to defend and support the people who are affected by this order. Work to make America safe again!
