By any and every metric the Women’s March on Washington and the simultaneous Women’s Marches around the U.S. and around the world were a huge success! Millions of people came out in solidarity with women to show their unity in fighting the policies of the incoming U.S. administration. In every location where marches were organized and permitted the actually attendees dwarfed the initial estimates for attendance. My family could not be there but we followed it all day and it was positive and heartening and hopeful–three things sorely needed one day after Cheeto was sworn in.
Now, with this amazingly successful, visual, visceral and monumental event as a springboard the daily and sustained work of democratically resisting this administration begins. Cheeto has laid out a quasi-plan for his first 100 days in office. Needless to say the changes in laws and regulations proposed are for the most part abhorrent. He will obviously also be seeking to have his cabinet confirmed and to nominate a Supreme Court justice for confirmation.
Many organizations and personalities have come up with action plans to resist Cheeto’s policy moves, proposed changes to laws and regs and nominations. Following are the three easiest and most effective Cheeto blocking proposals:
- Call your three Congresspeople every day and voice your opposition to (or support for) proposed legislation in a voicemail. It’s simple, call (202) 224-3121 for the Capitol switchboard, give them your zip code and they will put you in contact with your Representative and two Senators. You can also find Congress persons’ direct telephone numbers at www.house.gov/htbin/findrep and www.senate.gov/senators/contact/ This should take no more than 10 minutes to call all three Congresspeople and leave a message of opposition for negative legislation or support for positive legislation. In his recent speeches in New York and Washington, DC, filmmaker Michael Moore reminded audiences that this tactic worked recently to stop Congress from from passing legislation that would have eviscerated the Office of Congressional Ethics. Moore suggested that our first calls on Monday 1/23/2017 should be to voice opposition to the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education as she is clearly unqualified for the position. This action is concrete, effective and easy, and if done consistently it will become a habit. Please make it a habit.
- Write letters to the editor of your newspaper and op-eds, with a steady flow of arguments about the fallacies and dangers of Trump’s First 100 Day policies and initiatives. This is word for word from Robert Reich’s “The First 100 Day of Resistance Agenda.” Op-eds are the most read section of the newspaper and many people and decision makers still read newspapers and “take the temperature” of certain issues by the op-eds that certain local, regional and national papers publish. Check your local or favorite national newspapers’ guidelines for submissions and try to write and submit at least one opinion piece or letter to the editor a month. Again, this action is concrete, effective and easy, and if done consistently it will become a habit. Please make it a habit.
- Contribute to social media to spread the word about what Cheeto and the Congress are trying/planning to do and how to most effectively shut down their plans. This is also an idea from Robert Reich’s “The First 100 Day of Resistance Agenda.” The efficacy of social media has been shown again and again. If people are passionate about your post it will spread like wildfire and start various organizations and individuals in motion to help change people’s concerns into actions of resistance. This action is concrete, effective and easy, and if done consistently it will become a habit. Please make it a habit.
Finally, one proposal that is not being seriously discussed and amplified is to start right now to insure that the Congress is balanced in 2018. The best way to weaken Trump permanently is to take the House and the Senate away from the Republicans. The best way to do this is to: A) immediately encourage opposition i.e. non-Republican candidates to start advertising themselves and campaigning right now; B) let all non-Republican candidates know that if they are elected they will be doing the bidding of the people who elect them and not the bidding of the Democratic National Convention which is an outdated extension of Wall Street and in bed with its Republican ‘adversaries’; C) every time a Republican Congressperson supports/endorses/votes for harmful legislation lambast the hell out of them in every local and regional media outlet that you can!
Do what you can, when you can, to keep the pressure on our elected representatives to shape America into the place that you the people want it to be!
