Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. DeSantis Introduce Constitutional Amendment for Term Limits

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) proposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution last week to impose term limits on members of Congress. The amendment, a joint resolution, would limit U.S. senators to two six-year terms (12 years) and members of the U.S. House of Representatives to three two-year terms (6 years).

The amendment was cosponsored in the Senate by Sens. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), and David Perdue (R-Ga.)

“D.C. is broken,” said Sen. Cruz. “The time is now for Congress, with the overwhelming support of the American people, to submit this constitutional amendment to the states for speedy ratification. With control of a decisive majority of the states, the House of Representatives, and the Senate, we have a responsibility to answer the voters’ call-to-action. We must deliver.”

This is one of the most important steps towards realizing true democracy in his country.

“Term limits are the first step towards reforming Capitol Hill,” said Rep. DeSantis. “Eliminating the political elite and infusing Washington with new blood will restore the citizen legislature that our Founding Fathers envisioned. The American people have called for increased accountability and we must deliver.”

Whatever you might think about these Congresspersons’ stance on other issues, they are spot on with this simple, concise constitutional amendment. Now, we the people must put pressure on all of our own Congresspersons in both the House and the Senate and on our state legislatures and governors to get this amendment passed. Constitutional Amendments are obviously the most difficult pieces of legislation to get passed as they require a two-thirds majority on both the House and the Senate and require two-thirds of the states to also ratify the amendment.

A Republican controlled Congress is anathema to the balance of power envisioned by our Founding Fathers when the President is also Republican and therefore all efforts should be made between now and the next election cycle in two years to restore the balance if power. However, while the reality is that the Republicans control Congress it is incumbent on the American people to loudly and vocally support positive proposed legislation (of course, it is equally it is incumbent on the American people to loudly and vocally oppose negative proposed legislation).

Please find the emails of your U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives and/or their Facebook pages and the email of your governor (if not your state legislators) and send them a very simple message “Please support Sen. Ted Cruz’s and Rep. Ron DeSantis’ proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution to impose term limits on members of Congress.”

With the pressure of the people united for true democracy we can realize change.
